Back in the saddle

2008 Glancing at my spanking new 2008 Pocket Astrologer I was startled to note today’s Mars/Pluto opposition (1:28 pm PST), since I can usually feel those puppies coming from a mile away. Yet this one had flown right below my radar, obscured by clouds of mellowness and mindless television. (El spouse had 11 days off work and, other than a brief junket to L.A. for a couple of days, we spent them relaxing, reading, visiting with friends, and sleeping late. Completely fabulous.) Looking back at a blog entry from late September, I see a woman frazzled and overworked as the last Mars/Pluto opposition knocked me down, kicked me hard, and stole my lunch money. It’s amazing what a mini-vacation can do for a gal; today’s opposition finds me relaxed and cheery, with an utterly free day ahead of me. Not to brag, or anything.

I was on a near-total media blackout for the past week and a half, but a few big stories managed to squeeze through. The Bhutto assassination was shocking, which is weird considering it was entirely expected. I gather the U.S. presidential hopefuls have been practically wetting themselves in their efforts to woo the fine people of Iowa. A tiger got loose in the San Francisco Zoo, killed someone, and injured a couple of other people. Robin Wright Penn gave sourpuss Sean Penn his walking papers, and presumably Lindsey Lohan got up to something or other. But here in the Kent household, all was happiness.

A holiday expedition to a bookstore garnered a couple of fine reads - How I Got Published, a collection of essays by writers about their experiences getting their stuff into print (which should more aptly be titled, “How I Got My Mystery Novel Published,” since the overwhelming majority of contributors seem to be from that genre… not that there’s anything wrong with that). Not a lot of surprises here - “persist” seems to be the thrust of the thing - but it was an enjoyable read nevertheless.

I also picked up something called You, Inc. (coincidentally, also the title of my latest essay for the Llewellyn Moon Sign book, out this summer in the 2009 edition) which is a surprisingly readable, inspirational without being goopy, Jupiter-in-Capricorn appropriate guide to pimping yourself effectively and mercilessly. A perfect primer for yours truly, because despite my Leonine swagger and bravado I’m trembling in my boots at going forth into the cruel world and promoting my tiny cupcake of a book. Ack!

Well, anyway. Happy new year and all. Pluto goes into Capricorn soon and of course there’s that Saturn/Uranus opposition this year, so I’m enjoying the peace and quiet while we have them. Buckle up.

13 Pieces of My First Soul Collage

Michele at New Moon Journal suggests celebrating Jupiter’s move into Sagittarius by making a “soul collage” to represent Jupiter’s teaching energy in your life. Mine began with the idea of an elephant in a wheat field, and grew from there. When I was finished, this is what I found lying around in the Jupiterian corner of my psyche:

1. A Field of Wheat
2. A Path
3. A Sky
4. A Girl
5. A Woman
6. A Car
7. A Road Sign
8. A Moon
9. An Ancestral Home
10. A Wise Mother
11. A Shy Child
12. A Grove of Trees
13. A Bolt of Lightning

What would you put in your Jupiter soul collage?

The last gasp

Thanksgiving was super. Exhausting, but great. The drive was straight-forward (but damn! five hours of driving in one day is a lot of driving), my family all got along, the food was terrific. Very Sun/Jupiter, Jupiter-into-Sag. Hurray!

I can’t say I’m enjoying Jupiter’s dying gasp in my 12th house, though, where he’s hanging on by his fingertips for a couple of more days before he finally hauls his portly ass onto the ledge of my ascendant. Oh, he looks harmless enough, this ebullient little Jupiter in Sag elf, but he’s dragging some serious 12th house toilet paper along on the bottom of his shoe. I’ve had a few dazzling psychological insights over the past couple of days that I really could have done without, thanks very much. So yes, the recent Scorpio Stampede through my 12th house is finally breaking up and beginning to move on to 1st house pastures, but all this means is that the rich psychological compost I’ve been turning over for the past few weeks is kind of spilling out all over the place. Some of it, in fact, is very old stuff that’s been getting churned over in my psyche for at least a full Jupiter cycle or two.

The last time Jupiter crossed my Ascendant, twelve years ago, my brother died and I escaped to a new city for awhile to deal with the aftermath. I don’t expect this transit to be quite so dramatic - after all, back then Jupiter was joined by Pluto - but it’s still enough to give me pause. I think when all is said and done, Jupiter is a symbol neither of great good nor great bad; it’s just a big, fat exclamation mark that gets placed at the end of anything it comes across. What have you got lurking in your mind, heart, and body? Jupiter expands it until there simply is no room to keep it inside any longer. Sometimes, I suppose, it explodes, a la Michael Richards.

One of my favorite diarists, Marn has been having some insights lately, too, as she cares for her beloved and ailing mother-in-law. Her latest entry - which is all about giving to the people we love in the way that’s meaningful to them - is a treasure. And don’t miss Michele’s New Moon in Scorpio ruminations, a great essay that’s all about how to kick that Scorpio toilet paper off our shoes. Enjoy!

Death of a President

Kathryn has posted her thoughts about the upcoming exact Jupiter/Saturn square and its implications in the “Presidential Death Cycle.”

Planetary alignments currently indicate an increased likelihood of the death or assassination of a World Leader and as these indications coincide with the ‘Presidential Death Cycle’ and his chart is highly volatile in coming months, George W. Bush comes high on the list. (I have noted elsewhere in my posts that some of the cycles currently active correlate to the Royal family and a leader capitulating).

And it’s kind of interesting to note that the (fictional) death of George W. Bush is all over the news this weekend, thanks to the film Death of a President which is due in U.S. theaters soon after a warm reception at the Toronto Film Festival.

Hmmm. Wonder if the film is acting as a kind of pressure relief valve for this building Jupiter/Saturn energy.  Jeff… any thoughts?
