Over at Seduction Central, my good pal and fellow blogger Jeffrey Kishner has posted an interview in which he and I take on the issue of Sun sign astrology in general and specifically how I used it in my book. I’ve promised him that someday we’ll do a delicious podcast on the subject, in which he and Lynn can take turns spanking me with an oversized ephemeris. In the meantime, enjoy this! (And thanks, brother Jeff, for the plug.)

Wednesday’s lunar eclipse made a rather precise square to my Ascendant - an astrological symbol laden with meanings both practical and esoteric, among them a description of the physical body. If yon friend, family member, or client is ailing, undergoing surgery, getting into an accident, or doing somethin’ freaky with their hair, look for some kind of aspect to the natal Ascendant.
I would say the one-two punch of a lunar eclipse and transiting Saturn within orb of bitch-slapping my Ascendant certainly qualities. It’s fitting, then, that yesterday found me in the dentist’s chair, bracing for a long-delayed extraction. As it turns out, having a tooth pulled was by far the least painful/troublesome dental procedure I’ve ever had. I’ve had cleanings that were more uncomfortable. I entered the oral surgeon’s office at 1:00 p.m. and was on my way by 1:30 p.m. Approximately 29 minutes and 30 seconds of that time was spent waiting around in a cold office, practicing my deep breathing exercises while the local anesthetic did its magic. The other 30 seconds was… well, not something I’d take up as a hobby, but nowhere near as dreadful as a root canal. And when the local wore off? A couple of Tylenol and I barely knew anything had happened in there.
Except for the gaping crevice in my mouth, of course, which is weird and feels huuuuuge. Fortunately it doesn’t show (concerns about appearance are also represented by the Ascendant, which clearly has its hands full here in the land that plastic surgery built), even when I smile my widest - which is of course a relief, though it may hurt my chances of starring in a revival of Hee Haw.
Elsewhere, a good friend with real medical problems underwent successful open heart surgery on the day of the eclipse. Ten hours of uninterrupted knife time, and he’s doing very well. (No word on his surgeons; can you image operating on someone for 10 hours straight?!) I don’t have his chart handy, but I must say I was a little concerned when he told me the date of his surgery. What a relief that all is well!
Lynn and Jude amongst, I’m sure, other able bloggers pointed out John McCain’s Eclipse-to-Natal Sun woes related to alleged misconduct with a female lobbyist. The Schadenfreude, it is delicious.

FULL MOON/LUNAR ECLIPSE
Wednesday, February 20, 2008
7:30 pm PST / 10:30 pm EST
Sun at 1.52 Pisces / Moon at 1.52 Virgo
The Wheat and the Chaff
For two years, I’ve observed my Pisces friends closely, trying to understand the elusive quality that fuels their warm-hearted popularity, generosity of spirit, and love of Desperate Housewives. I’ve battled the demons of my own judgements, snobbery, and unrealistic expectations. I’ve reached toward my elitist Virgo Midheaven, and instead produced a sweet little cupcake of a book that sprang from the soulful, collective longings of my Pisces fourth house, the house of home and nurturing, the primordial birthplace of everything else in the chart. And I’m left wondering: Have I failed Virgo, or made friends with Pisces? Or something in between?… read the full article here

Other than cranking out reports for people, I hadn’t been paying much attention to Wednesday’s eclipse. “Not much in my chart sits at 17.44 of a fixed sign,” thought I… oh. Except my natal Sun, at 13.08 Leo, that is. Might that explain the uncontrollable tooth-grinding and exhaustion of the past week? Big week for my near-astrotwin Barack Obama, too, of course. Wonder how his teeth are holding up?
So here’s what you do with eclipses: Look where they fall in your chart, what they aspect, and the years when eclipses closely aspected this same point (I use conjunctions, oppositions, and squares within about 4 degrees). In the case of this eclipse, consider 2003/04, 1998-2000, 1993/94, 1990, just for starters. The overwhelming focus of the past few weeks for me has, of course, been the publication of le book. As it happens, this eclipse opposed my 9th house Sun - publishing, right? In 2004, the first of many articles I’ve written for the Llewellyn Moon Sign Book came out. In 1999, I started my website. In 1994, I published my first article in the Mountain Astrologer. In 1990 I started my first newsletter and went into practice as a professional astrologer.
See how that works?
On the other hand, here’s what Obama’s been doing with eclipses to his 9th house Sun at 12 Leo, prior to his stunning Super Tuesday performance: 2003/04, elected to the U.S. Senate. 2000: Mounted an unsuccessful run for the House of Representatives. 1998: Re-elected to the Illinois State Senate. 1993: Became of lecturer of constitutional law, University of Chicago Law School; 1990: Elected the first black president of Harvard Law Review. (And TWO books along the way. Showoff.)
What’s going on at about 13-22 of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, or Aquarius in your chart?
