13 Books Piled in a Precarious Heap
on My Bedside Table

I don’t have a lot of time for reading this days, but as you might expect from someone with the Moon in Gemini I can’t get to sleep at night without knocking back a page or two of some light, diverting read. We’re not talking about Literature here; typically it’s a chapter of something acerbic from the Joe Queenan (pictured above) collection, but Sandra Tsing Loh, Laurie Notaro, or David Sedaris also make regular appearances in the lineup.

The Frenchman can’t understand how I can read the homicide book just before I sleep. It’s filled with the nastiest pictures of dead bodies. There isn’t a horror movie that comes close to this. I just cover them up with a card until I can look at ‘em in the daylight.

I’m reading Orhan Pamuk’s Snow, which is quite good, but I haven’t had time to get back to it for about two weeks. I also have a growing pile of New Yorkers. I can usually get to the movie reviews, but haven’t even managed that. But the big deadline is past, so hopefully now. I also have Urrea’s The Hummingbird’s Daughter waiting. Three poetry books are also on my nightstand, as is my journal. My ephemeris is now on the floor beside my desk. I’ve just started listening to Ruth Reichl’s Garlic and Sapphires, and I have Pimsleur Spanish IV awaiting as well.

I have read a book a day (at least; two yesterday) while I process my funk. I am finally seeing the light. WOO-HOO for me!
